The first days of 2022 saw WordPress 5.9 release and the first appearance of full site editing block themes like Twenty Twenty Two. Here we are : what has been announced two years ago became reality today.
And I do not recognize almost anything of what I knew in previous themes standards.
Even the yet previously required index.php file disappeared (if we except the commentary // There is nothing output here because block themes do not use php templates
).
Is this new direction in WordPress development meaning the end of PHP themes and PHP templates ? Are they going now to (slowly) disappear ?
I’m not a huge fan of the full site editing approach, and I would like to know if there is no future for the "old way" of building themes, and which languages will be necessary to build new themes (even if I’ve understood that the full site editing approach doesn’t require code).
